The Virginia men’s tennis team officially opened their season on January 24, 2007 with a shutout win against William and Mary. The squad, however, was looking to this season ever since last year’s NCAA Tournament quarterfinals loss to eventual runner-up Georgia. After earning a preseason ranking of No. 8, the Cavaliers (23-3) blew through the competition on their way to the No. 2 ranking in the country. They ended their regular season campaign this past weekend after beating No. 16 Duke and No. 5 North Carolina, to remain undefeated in the ACC with an 11-0 record. Virginia will look to reclaim the ACC championship crown after losing last year in the finals to Duke, despite having won the last two out of three conference titles.
And the man to lead the team into the ACC tournament in Cary, North Carolina? None other than the No. 2 player in the country – Somdev Devvarman. Last year, the Chennai, India native posted a 31-13 singles record, and fought his way to the NCAA Tournament finals, before suffering a loss to top-seeded Benjamin Kohlloeffel of UCLA. Devvarman concluded this season with a 30-5 singles record and three ACC Player of the Week honors. It is now time for Devvarman and the Cavaliers to take their game to the next level as ACC tournament play begins April 19 and the NCAA Championships commence May 11.
