We’re just two weeks into the 2008 college football season, and a potential Heisman finalist’s hopes are already in jeopardy. Here are the favorites after 2 weeks:

Tim Tebow, Florida QB: Last year’s Heisman trophy winner looked more like himself in Florida’s win over Miami, throwing for 256 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 55 more. Urban Meyer has said he will ask Tebow to do whatever it takes to win, so his numbers should continue to impress. So far he has thrown for 392 yards and 3 touchdowns and added 92 yards on the ground. Florida is off next week, but look for Tebow faces a tough test on September 20th in Knoxville against Tennessee. I expect Tebow to play his best game of the season against the Volunteers.

Chris “Beanie” Wells, Ohio State RB: Wells sat out last Saturday’s game against Ohio University, and the Buckeyes really missed him. Ohio State’s offense struggled in their 26-14 victory, raising many questions before their huge showdown versus USC. Wells’ had 111 yards and a touchdown in his lone game of the season. If Wells is able to go on Saturday, it would be big lift for the Buckeyes as well as his Heisman chances. I fully expect Wells to play, but he will have a tough time running against USC’s vaunted defense. UVa learned this the hard way…

Mark Sanchez, USC QB: Sanchez and the Trojans were off last weekend, as they enjoyed an extra week of preparation before their matchup with the 5th ranked Buckeyes this Saturday. Sanchez will need to move the Trojan offense efficiently and put up solid numbers for the Trojans to win, and if his does, his Heisman stock will assuredly rise. In the first game of the season against our Cavaliers, Sanchez threw for 338 yards and 3 touchdowns with an interception. Sanchez’s performance this weekend will greatly impact his Heisman hopes as well as USC’s national title chances.

Chase Daniel, Missouri QB: Daniel had another solid performance in Missouri’s blowout of SE Missouri State, throwing 245 yards and 3 touchdowns. So far this season Daniel has thrown for 568 yards and 6 touchdowns with just 1 interception. He also has 46 rushing yards. Daniel should have another big game when the Tigers take on Nevada next Saturday.

Knowshon Moreno, Georgia RB: Moreno had a huge game last Saturday against Central Michigan, rushing for 168 yards and 3 touchdowns. Moreno figures to be a scoring machine this season, as he already has 6 touchdowns in just 2 games, as well as 227 rushing yards and 83 receiving yards. The Bulldogs face their toughest opponent yet in South Carolina, but I still expect Moreno to have another big game.

Sentimental Favorite: UVa Defense: No member of the UVa offensive unit was particularly impressive in UVa’s 16-0 win over Richmond, but at least the defense pitched a shutout. Vic Hall’s pick six was probably the most exciting play of the game; too bad most everyone had left the stadium. Hopefully someone will step up on offense next week when the Cavaliers face UConn.
